Araiso Private High School Student Council, Executive Committee - 2 episodes
Region - All (2) Japanese / Subtitles - English & Chinese Produced by - ?????
Translation: You have to remember that this is a Japanese release and the translation is a little confusing at time, but that doesn't stop you enjoying all the fun that's going on! and really in the end the translation is only secondary to the animation, and we should just be thankful they put an English translation on it at all ^_~.
Review: This is great and the animation is one of the best I have seen in a long time! The story it self I don't think come directly from the manga (like Clamp's anime of 'Tokyo Babylon"), and it's refreshing. The 1st story is based upon what I would call a 'Sports Day' where the bad guys get there comeuppance when our hero's are told at first they cant enter any of the contests on grounds that they must police the school first. the 2nd is a strange kind of ghost story that just has you in stitches!... You expect Kabuto to say "ma'naa" any second, being a little bit of a Hakkai clone (not that I'm complaining. Kabu-chan, as Tokito would say, has a dark eerie streak *grin*). Tokito on the other hand runs around proclaiming how great and beautiful he is, and trying to get all the girls to fancy him, well that is until Kabu-chan basically calls him a liar... These tails are also hilarious, and great if you want cheering up after a hard day!
There also seems to be a made up chara just for the Anime, Fujiwara. or it could be one of the other Committee members, but there is just one more than I think there is supposed to be.
The Yaoi factor: owww... this is that anime I've been dreaming of. There is never anything to graphic, but when Tokito get's injured in episode 1, Kabuto reacts with saying "I've been hurt" with narrowed eyes then kick's the shit, he's pretty easy going until Tokito is concerned. There are a few beautiful close 'hinted at' intimacy, until they get disturbed, and then there is a wonderful bit in the 2nd one where innuendoes are abound all because Tokito wants Kabu-chan's ice cream! It's all very sweat really on some strange level!
Wild Adapter: There is a short clip or something on this DVD, I don't know if it's a promo, or something that animators did in their spare time... but it's just wonderful... there is a bit in it that I think I've always wanted to see in an anime... Kobuto (facing camera) and Tokito (facing away) both leaning on some high up railings about 3 feet apart, and suddenly Tokito kind of stretches towards Kobuto backwards, sideling up to him he, he turns round till he is leaning with his back againced Kobuto's chest, it's just a very telling and intimate, almost needy gesture that just made me squeal with the fuzzies... apart from that I hope to all heavens that they make it into an anime, that they have translated it and that I can get it on DVD ASAP!
Artbook - yup these episodes have an Artbook to go with them

Saiyuki (Season 1) (episodes 1 - 26) Single DVD & Collectable boxed set

Region - 1 English/Japanese - English Subtitles DVD's - 6 / Single boxed / 5/4 eps on each Produced by - ADV films
Translation: As far as translation goes it's goood, obviously leeway is given for lip-sink that is also good, ADV always do good on this part... It's also funnier and more explanative than all the subbing I've read, which is nice, I haven't read ADV's subbing yet but again I'm sure it's pointless.
The Dubbing: If you've already seen Saiyuki in Japanese, be ready for disappointment... All the voices just seem too young and in the first episode you wonder if they just got one voice actor for all the main male cast and then gave him a joint to make him sound constantly apathetic... But that's the first few episodes, I think once the actors get used to their character the voices improve. Sanzo - just sounds too young but get's more apathetic. Goku - Sounds to young again but just isn't annoying enough. Gojyo - not much to complain about his voice is probably the best. Hakkai - Ok so he does sound like a complete stoner, but there isn't any softness to his voice... Like I said is does get better and for anyone who's watching it for the first time, bare with the woodenness of the first episode it get's better ^_^ also they got the names right! and the actors say them well!
Update: I recommend that people read the Sub on this one, the jokes just aren't as funny in the dubbed version, and they seem to have gone out of their way to leave out all the homosexual remarks that make the Chinese subs so funny... just my opinion, but the voice overs still suck >_<
Review: Kudos to ADV! Not only have they brought us Saiyuki, but they dub it for us and then keep the original theme song and ending and they don't mess with the names! Sanzo is Sanzo! Gojyo, Hakkai and Goku! not a Tripitaka in sight!! There is some cultural notes on the DVD for anyone who has no idea what Saiyuki is about or it's origins (thought I didn't read um ^_~). The Boxed set version is OK, all it means is that you get a pretty cardboard box and with a naff t-shirt... The DVD quality is exhalent, normally region 1 DVD's can look grainy and pixelated on UK TV's but this version is faultless! thank you very muchly ADV!

Saiyuki Boxed Set (episodes 1 - 39) (Not all the episodes)

This also comes in a 9 boxed set with both seasons
Region - All (2) Japanese / Subtitles - English & Chinese Number of Disc's - 6 Produced by - Anime Cartoon
Translation: The translation on season 1 is faultless, only suffering from flipping by to fast every now and again... However the season 2 translation don't know that a Youkai is a Demon and insist on calling them 'genies', also they refer to gods as 'jinni', it also translated name's literally, and Goku is spelt Waukau... Apart from the hick-ups you get used to it... eventually...
Name Translation for season 2:
The good Guys;
Sanzo = Sanzang / Goku = Wukong / Gojyo = Wujing  / Hakkai = Bajie / Konzen (Sanzo's god self) = Jinchan / Kenren (Gojyo's God self) = Juanlian / Tenpo (Hakkai's God Self) = Canopy / Bosatu = Bodhisattva
The Bad Guys; Kougaiji = Red Child / Dokugakuji = Single Horn / Yaone = Babailie / Linri = Lili / Homura = (Yen) Prince Flame / Zenon = Zhiyuan / Shien = Shiyin ...
Basically unless you can hear and recognise the spoken Japanese name's, your going to get lost :P
Review: Despite the flaws in the translation of the 2nd season and the dodgy looking box... THIS is the boxed set to buy if you want the whole Japanese version... The opening menu is great and pretty.

Saiyuki Boxed Set (season 2) (episodes 27 - 50 the end)
Region - All (2) Japanese / Subtitles - English - Chinese Number of Disc's - 4 Produced by - Anime Studio Inc
Translation: OMG! who ever translated this isn't very good at English but has a doctorate in Engrish... They have taken the Japanese language and translated it word for word into English, this may sound like a good thing but if your fond of grammar and those little collection of words that could be collected into one, then this translation will be painful. following the dialogue just makes your brain hurt >_<
Thought saying that, at least they know what a Youkai is and what Immortal means... kind of...
Saying all this... The translation does get better towards the end... (or after 12 hours of constant watching you get used to it :P)
Name Translation for this Boxed set:
(For anyone who's watched that old Japans TV show from the early 80's called 'MONKEY' you will recognise these names)
The Good Guys; Sanzo = Tripitaka / Goku = Wookong  / Gojyo = Woojing / Hakkai = Pigsy / Konzen (Sanzo's god self) = Gold Cicada / Kenren (Gojyo's God self) = Juanlian / Tenpo (Hakkai's God Self) = Heaven Marshal / Bosatu = Bodhisattva
The Bad Guys; Kougaiji = Red Child / Dokugakuji = Horn / Yaone = 8 hundreds hunts / Lirin = Lylee / Homura = Prince Mars Flame / Zenon = Yeen / Shien = Ziyuan /
Review: What can I say... buy the boxed set above... I mean, nothing inspires dread like looking at the main DVD menu and seeing "PALY ALL" in big bold letters... also the one above will probably be cheaper :P
The only thing this set has going for it is the pretty images on the four discs themselves, the opening menu is plain and boring, and inspires no confidence... This is one you get out and impress your friends with... the one above is the one you lend out...
But saying all this I cant tell you what the 1st season boxed set is like released by the same people... also there are no opening or end credits on any of the episodes if you watch it back to back.

Saiyuki Reload (Series)
Region - All (2) Japanese / Subtitles - English - Chinese (Ongoing Series)
I haven't watched this yet (just the fan subs)... I just wanted to let you know it was out!

Saiyuki Requiem - The Movie
Region - All (2) Japanese / Subtitles - English - Chinese Number of Disc's - 1 Produced by - Manga international inc
Translation: Again, I think this is a Chinese version (I could be wrong) original Japanese with English and Chinese subtitles, the translation isn't that bad, again just glad it's in English of some kind! they keep the original names, though they fall at spelling Cho Gonou. Apart from that it's fine.
Review: The animation is pixalated at first but you get used to it, it just seems like they recorded it digitally on a really old computer that just couldn't number crunch the graphics all to well... There are some wonderful bit of animation where they pan around the chara while they are moving, (anyone who's a complete animation buff will just drool over Hakkai and Goku in the dinning room!)... The story takes a little time to start and has you sat their going "who? what? why?" until the plot finally starts to pull it's self together and then your sat on the edge of your set, then giggling at the foolery of the main bad guy who really need's a life... but I will say that at times you wonder why Kougaji and his horde are bothering being in the anime at all! but a nice story and for any Sanzo~x~Gojyo fans out there >_<, as always some nice Hakkai~x~Gojyo to to keep my fan interest *grins*
And that's all folks ^_^
This movie also has an artbook to go with it, 'Visual Complete' my review for it is HERE

Saiyuki *umm?* - another movie? interactive?
Region - All (2) Japanese / Subtitles - English - Chinese Number of Disc's - 1 Produced by - ????
Translation: Same as the ones above really, nothing to write home about... Good enough...
Review: "Sucks on teeth" brake out the caffeine, ya gonna need it! As far as the anime goes I would rather just brake out the TV series and watch a 25min episode. They get asked to find this 'Pearl Jade' (a red ball, go figure) that will grant any wish by Bosatu. So they do so, the end up in this town where this girl is healing everyone's wound all because she was abused when she was even younger, And shock, she's using the pearl Jade to do it. But lots of other nastiest also want it...
You have no sympathy with any of the chara, and really don't care if and when anything happens to them, they try to have some depth but it's pitiful...
I'm almost sure there is some kind of interaction software on this DVD but as to what it is I have noooo idea, and is probably the only renewing feature on this DVD... if you can read Japans... >_<
